Oncology

Pediatric oncology is not a single condition but a collection of many conditions that mostly occur in childhood. In the Netherlands, around 600 children between the ages of 0 and 18 get a type of a pediatric oncology condition every year. There is a big difference between tumors in children and in adults. The type is different, the underlying biology is different and the treatment and the chances of cure are different. Several types of pediatric oncology conditions occur in the Netherlands 5-25 times a year. Acute lymphatic leukemia is the most common.

For more information about pediatric oncology you can visit the website of SKION (In Dutch: Stichting Kinderoncologie Nederland, in English: Foundation of Pediatric Oncology The Netherlands) and the website of the VOKK (in Dutch: Vereniging Ouders, Kinderen en Kanker, in English: Association of Parents, Children & Cancer), see the links below.

Since June 2018, there is a center in the Netherlands where all highly complex care and research for children with cancer come together: the Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology. The mission of this center is “to cure every child with cancer, with optimal Quality of Life." To be able to measure and monitor Quality of Life and the development of children and young people, the center uses KLIK. You can find more information about the use of KLIK within the Princess Máxima Center on our website or in the video 'Information about the KLIK portal'.
